A pine-y bear

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Artist Richard Carpenter made this bear from “hundreds of thousands of pine needles. The pine needles were gathered off the ground, sorted, washed, trimmed and hand woven, over 8 months, in making the life size bear.”

The perfect pet?

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Mary Holstad creates realistic dogs and cats out of mohair.

Each creation is made with thick lush premium imported faux fur that is so soft to the touch. They have hand-embroidered lacquered noses, and premium hand-painted dark brown glass eyes. The face and feet are meticulously hand-trimmed, have hand-embroidered claws and hand-apliqued felt toes and pads. They are fully 5 way jointed, have sturdy armatures for posing and are stuffed with polyfill and plastic pellets for a nice weight.

Useful Gorillas

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Bits and pieces found this very useful product, Gorilla Snot, which is a gripping aid - a non-gooey, naturally refined tree rosin. It reacts with your body’s natural chemistry and heat output to retain a steady grip on picks drumsticks, bows, and any other hard to grip instruments.

Around our house, Gorilla Glue is the adhesive we swear by. It works great on wood and other tough to repair items. It works better than Super glue in many cases.

Chocolate Mice

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The Williams-Sonoma internet catalog has these chocolate truffle mice listed for $15.00 for a set of four.
Made entirely by hand, they combine milk chocolate ganache centers with a coating of milk chocolate.

If you have a little time, you can make your own chocolate mice, like we did.

The nose is a Hershey’s kiss. The body is a maraschino cherry. Stick them together, dip into white or dark melted chocolate, use almond slivers for ears.
Done.
Cute. Easy. Cheap.

Wooliedales

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Woolies are created using a technique called needle-felting. In addition to selecting the highest quality pure carded bulk wool from Australia, America and England in various colors, each Woolie is treated to be moth-resistant.

To begin, the wool is pressed together or rolled tightly against itself into a basic form. This roughly formed wool is then sculpted into a specific shape with a felting needle.

There are a bunch of poses to choose from.
